Duncan McCann: Why have Complementary Currencies Not Changed the World?

Evidence of the negative aspects of money creation and methods of allocation have been available for well over a century and yet the fundamentals of the system remain larger unchanged. Periodic times of systemic failure and deep recession and depression have caused innovative entrepreneurs to develop alternative forms of money. Despite all this innovation most either die off or remain too small to be considered relevant in the macro-economic environment. I will explore some of the reasons for this problem of scale and impact as well as briefly explain a new proposal for national digital currency for Scotland seeking to address some of the issues of national money systems while creating a complementary currency that will be macro-economically significant.
