Bitcoin can be introduced in various terms: an engineering project, an economic proposition, a social phenomenon, or even a political challenge to the nation state. Behind all of them sits a community of digital natives who feel at home in a world of flattened hierarchies, immaterial consumption, and new forms of networked sociality. Bringing together hackers, ideologues, and financiers, the community has thrived despite its internal contradictions, and managed to marry the principles of open source culture with proprietary capitalism.

This talk will give a whirlwind introduction to the protocol and its community, with some reference to predecessors and rivals for context, and ultimately aim to place Bitcoin within current debates about money, identity, digital culture, and self-interested human communities in a networked age.
