Peter Hanappe: Peer-to-Peer Food Lab

Bits That Matter Panel

Where: Paccar Theatre

When: 15:00 – 17:00 15/11/14

The goal of P2P Food Lab is to experiment with new ways to organise food chains, including production, distribution and waste management. Why should we do this? Well, first, because of their high dependence on oil, current agriculture and food distribution are not sustainable. Second, because the food industry is increasingly concentrated in a handful of companies. Changing things around is a huge task. That’s why we’ll begin small, with the P2P Food Lab Starter Kit. It’s a 1.2×1.2m greenhouse with a set of seeds, an Internet connected sensorbox and backed-up by a social network. It’s a tiny beginning – maybe somewhat naive – but the first step is to raise awareness and to help people get involved in growing and sharing food. The importance is that we develop new tools and methods that are open, sustainable and to allow us to combine our efforts. We’ll see what happens next.
